Government Invests In Athletic Programs

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is hoping to improve South Korea's chances of winning Olympic medals by investing several billion won in the country's athletic programs.

Minister Yu In-chon said the government would spend 390 billion won until 2012 to help develop the country's athletic training programs and facilities. The government plans to build an indoor stadium in Daegu to provide athletes a place to train. There are also plans to hire top foreign coaches to help foster young talented athletes.

With the World Athletics Championships in Daegu in 2011 and the London Olympics in 2012, Korea's athletes have a lot to prepare for. South Korea has not been very successful in track and field events in the past. With this huge investment of money, Yu hopes that Korean runners will take home more medals in these upcoming events.

Local athletes could also take home more than just a medal at these games. The Korea Athletics Federation (KAF) is increasing the amount of money it will give to athletics that can set world records. This means that athletes may also gain huge financial rewards if they can break any Korean or world records.

Anyone who can set a new world record in the men's 100-meter dash or marathon will receive 1 billion won from the KAF. A reward of 500 million won would go to anyone who could run the 100-meter dash in less than 10 seconds, or run the marathon in less than 2 hours and 5 minutes.
