| | | | | | | | | | 한미 FTA 제자리 걸음 (FTA in Limbo) | | South Korea and the United States have been discussing a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA) for a couple of years now. An FTA could bolster the economy of the two countries, but both sides are worried that they might get the short end of the stick in an unequal deal. After several revisions and debates over the agreement, the Korean government has said that it's had enough.
"It has been and will be our firm position that no contents agreed by the two countries should be changed in any format, whether through renegotiations or additional talks," said chief FTA negotiator Lee Hae-min.
Recently, the South Korean government announced that it had renegotiated the proposed FTA enough times and would not budge any further on the deal. The two countries scheduled a trade ministers meeting to speak with one another about the deal for the first time since U.S. President Barack Obama took office. "We will discuss a whole range of bilateral trade issues through the meeting," Lee said. "The top priority is the ratification of the Korea-U.S. agreement."
The FTA has been in limbo waiting for approval at the U.S. National Assembly. It cleared the subcommittee and GNP-led committee meetings earlier this year. However, the U.S. has hinted that it wants to make a few changes to the FTA before submitting it to congress. In particular, U.S. trade representative Ron Kirk said that Washington is hoping to further open the Korean market to U.S. beef and automobile imports.
Korea, on the other hand, said it is happy with the deal as it is and will not be willing to renegotiate yet another time. However, Korea's U.S. ambassador Han Duck-soo said that while Korea is not willing to make any changes to the current auto agreement, it may be willing to negotiate U.S. beef provisions. "We have no intention of reopening already concluded agreements," Han said. "However, Seoul is prepared to discuss the contents of the complaints that are holding the U.S. back." | | | | | | | | | '자카르타 폭탄테러, 제마 이슬라미야 소행' | | | | | | | | 지구 온난화로 인해 바다 온도가 올라가면서 해운대에 상어가 출몰할 가능성이 더 높아졌다. | | | | | | | | | | |
