| | | | | | | | | | 'Stick Bug' Is World's Largest Insect | | Entomophobics, or people who are afraid of insects, have something brand new to be scared of. Deep in the steamy rainforests on the island of Borneo, scientists have discovered the largest bug in the world.
A member of the species Phobaeticus Chan, or Chan's Megastick, was measured at over a foot in length. And that's just the body. If the legs are counted, the insect is closer to 22 inches in length, or almost 56 centimeters.
The specimen was identified by a scientist from the Natural History Museum in London. Scientists from the Natural History Museum of Ferrara in Italy and from the University of Florida in Gainesville confirmed that the Chan is the biggest bug of all.
The Phobaeticus Chan was only identified in 1989. It's a dull green color, and is one of the many species of "stick bugs." Stick bugs are well known for their amazing camouflage. If they stand perfectly still, it is very difficult to tell the difference between the insect and a normal stick on a tree. Some species even look as if they have leaves growing on them.
The previous record holder was another stick bug. The Phobaeticus Chani was just a centimeter shorter than the Chan, though its record held up for over 100 years.
The new world record holder will be taken to the Natural History Museum in London. It will join the display known as the Creepy Crawlies Gallery. | | | | | | | | | '기초적 의료서비스만으로도 수백만 어린이 구할 수 있다' - 미국 '아동구호기구' | | | | | | | | 크리스마스의 짧은 역사 II | | | | | | | | | | |
