Wednesday, 12 December 2009 San Diego to Get New Opera House Special Report by Claire Fischer Christina Formoza, the Mayor of San Diego, announced at a press conference last night that she had approved a proposal to build a new opera house in the heart of the city. Ms. Formoza expects the development to inject new life into the inner city, and she hopes that it will boost the profile of the arts and culture in the area. She announced with optimism: "For too long, Southern California has had a lack of big cultural events like operas and stage productions, but that will all change now." Ms. Formoza is not the only one excited by this development. Local Arts Council Chairperson, Sandra Batty, has already released a statement applauding the decision, and it is expected that others involved in the creative industries will also welcome the news. The proposed opera house features a radical architectural design created by leading architect Rudolph van Eeden. There are also plans to incorporate the building into a larger urban renewal project, with nearby areas being transformed into parks, art spaces, or other recreational facilities open to the public. Citizens are able to view and make suggestions about the proposed changes at www.sandiegocity.com. Construction work on the new opera house will begin in the New Year. Developers are hopeful that the work can be completed by the following October, meaning that San Diego's new opera house may be open for business by November 2011. |
