Maru Honored with Prestigious Award World-renowned stage actor Curtis Maru was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at last night's World Stage and Drama Awards ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Gupton Convention Center in Hong Kong, and broadcast live to over 500 million viewers. Mr. Maru, 71, has appeared in over 100 shows and musicals on New York's Broadway and in London's West End. He has also written and produced a number of successful stage hits, including Boardwalk and Lonesome Tonight. He is already a lifetime member of the American Performers' Hall of Fame, having been inducted in a ceremony last year. Other big winners on the night included Mike Willis, who received the award for best actor for his work in the musical The Chain Gang, and Genevieve Laurent, who got the best actress award for her performance in Cleopatra. Best show went to Campbelltown, the hard-hitting drama about life in the Australian outback. Campbelltown director, Leo Bosman, also picked up the best director award. However, the night belonged first and foremost to Curtis Maru. Mr. Maru is expected to retire from acting and producing now, and it is appropriate that he bow out in such fine style. |
