Research shows that in the face of economic difficulties, consumer habits change dramatically. Middle and lower class shoppers, for example, greatly reduce their luxury and entertainment shopping and generally switch to cheaper brands. Luxury item sales have dropped significantly as a result of the recent economic crisis; however, this time, shoppers are continuing to spend on big-name brands.
South Korea's largest electronics maker, Samsung Electronics, has reported an impressive number of sales for its new Zipel Furniture refrigerator and says it has the unsteady economy to thank. According to Samsung, shoppers are more conscious about the overall value for their dollar, and are therefore sticking to brand names they trust.
"In smartening their spending, consumers these days have higher standards for quality and are interested most if a product will deliver bang for their buck," an official from Samsung said. "Therefore, consumers will buy a product if they think the quality is there."
LG Electronics is also seeing an increase in sales with its high-end line of products such as the Whisen Forever Wine Dress air-conditioner, which sells for more than 4 million won. According to LG, the popular airconditioner accounts for more than 20 percents of its air-conditioner sales. Consumers are thinking more about the value of every penny, and are thus putting a bigger emphasis on the credibility of the company and brand," said Jin Young-jae, a researcher from the Samsung Economic Research Institute. "In short, shoppers are looking to make a purchase with less risk."
Online shoppers are also sticking to big-name brands even when they buy second-hand.
