The Marion City Council will meet this week to vote on a city ordinance that would restrict daytime parking on Eagle Street on weekdays. Due to its proximity to Marion Community College, the street is often congested with the vehicles of students attending classes. If passed, the new ordinance would restrict parking on the street between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Councilman Sean Hudson proposed the measure after a group of residents complained about the impact of the college students parking in the neighborhood. They claim that since the college opened last year, there has been an increase in the instances of littering and noise violations. Additionally, due to the high volume of vehicles in the area during the day, residents have difficulty finding open parking spaces near their homes.
When the college opened last year, the city sent out a questionnaire to identify potential problems. At that time, only half of the people responded. Among those, 63% had no complaints, 22% had parking complaints, and 15% had littering complaints. These figures were not enough to require formal action from the city. But as time has gone on, the problem has escalated significantly, with nearly 95% of area residents in favor of the parking restrictions.
The Marion City Council meets Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at City Hall to discuss the matter. All residents are welcome to attend. |
