Might as well get married if we are going to meet this frequently." | | | | | | | | | | U.S. FDA Expands to China | | 1) In response to an alarming number of food scandals involving food imported from China, the United States has decided to open offices for its Food and Drug Administration in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. It is the first time the FDA will operate outside of the U.S., a move intended to improve the safety of Chinese exports to America.
2) "Establishing a permanent FDA presence in China will greatly enhance the speed and effectiveness of our regulatory cooperation and our efforts to protect consumers in both countries," said Mike Leavitt, secretary to the offices of the U.S. Health and Human Services.
3) Leavitt, along with the agency's Food and Drug Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, will be in charge of the FDA's first office in Beijing. So far, 13 employees have been assigned to work in one of the FDA's three offices in China, although their specific roles have not yet been announced. As part of its global strategy, the U.S. plans to open FDA offices in India, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, as well. Leavitt said putting U.S. inspectors around the world will enable the FDA to respond more rapidly to any problems that may occur.
4) "The opening of offices around the world is part of a desire we have to both improve our relationships and to work jointly, in collaboration, with host governments," Leavitt said.
