Asian-Americans In Fashion

When Asian families first began immigrating to the United States, many of them worked as clothing manufacturers. However, the West is now home to many successful Asian fashion designers. Some of them were born and raised in Asian countries while others were born and raised in the U.S.

One top fashion designer is Thakoon Panichgul, who was born in Thailand but grew up in the U.S. Panchigul's style is currently the hottest trend in New York City. He recently created a special dress for Michelle Obama, who is the wife of the U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. She wore Panichgul's dress to the Democratic convention. It was an Asian style dress that looked like a kimono. Panichgul said he was very happy to see his dress on a possible first lady.

Many top Asian-American fashion designers come from the East Coast of the U.S. However, there are a number of top designers like Peter Som, Alexander Wang, Humberto Leon, and Carol Lim who grew up in California, on the West Coast. Many of them work and travel between the two coasts. They say that their style is a mixture of New York and Los Angeles fashion as well as a mixture of Eastern and Western cultures.

Some people see a connection between the Asian-American designers. Panichgul believes there is a sense of respect and formality that brings the designers together. Lim says ⓐit is an Asian work ethic. Korean-American designer Richard Chai says Korean culture taught him to pay attention to the details and to push his looks forward. He also thinks that Asian designers generally have purity in their designs.

There are also designers who disagree. Korean-American designer Doo-ri Chung, for example, doesn't think that her style is a reflection of her ethnicity. Instead, she believes her style is influenced by her schooling and the American culture that she grew up in.
