'Melamine Scare' Grips South Korea
  

In the past month, a "melamine scare" has taken over South Korea. ① the snacks and milk that they purchase. That's because they are worried that the food they are buying contains melamine.

Melamine is an industrial chemical that is ② . In recent years, some Chinese food producers have been putting melamine into certain food substances. Adding melamine can make food products seem to have high protein content when they actually do not. However, high doses of melamine are ③ .

Two months ago, melamine was found in infant formula and other milk products from China. In China, milk containing melamine killed four babies and made more than 50,000 babies sick. The scandal has shaken the rest of the world, as well, because a large number of food products in the world come from China. After the tainted milk scandal in China, the Korean Food and Drugs Administration began examining the 304 food products that use milk or soybean protein from China. It found a number of snacks to contain a high amount of melamine, including those from Haitai Confectionary. High melamine content was also found in a domestic coffee creamer. These melamine-tainted products ④ .

However, many South Korean consumers are still worried about goods from China. They are worried that ⑤ . And it turns out they have plenty of reasons to worry. Last year, toxic levels of lead were found in toys that were imported from China. In the same year, thousands of cats and dogs in the U.S. died after eating pet food from China. The cause of death was melamine.
