Sales Tax Debate Heats Up Members of the San Marcos City Council are considering a proposal for a tax policy that is aimed at boosting the local economy. Under the policy, retail stores would be refunded a portion of the sales tax income they generate. According to its 1.-------, the incentive policy would attract businesses to the San Marcos area as well as help smaller retail outlets maintain profits and create jobs. A greater variety of retail stores would also increase the quality of life of San Marcos residents. The proposal would also allow for additional funding for businesses building new locations, as long as the construction was performed by local contractors.
As promising as the proposal sounds, some members of the council say that it is a 2.-------- move. The practice has not been tried in a community of our size, and it’s impossible to predict its outcome. There is no guarantee that stores 3.------- the funds in job growth. Additionally, the city would collect a smaller amount of sales tax revenue, which leaves some programs in jeopardy.
The matter will be discussed at the upcoming city council meeting at 7 p.m. at the community center. Residents of San Marcos are welcome to attend and contribute their opinions. |
