Many people enjoy watching athletes from their own country win medals, but they also want to see popular teams and athletes from other nations. Athletes from 204 countries participated in the Olympics, but in Korea, viewers only saw a handful of them on television. Korean stations' coverage of the Beijing Olympics focused on Korean athletes and not much else. ⓐThis is also common in other tournaments such as Wimbledon and the FIFA World Cup. However, sports fans were still disappointed to see only events that Korean athletes were competing in. Instead of showing the basketball game between the United States and China, Korean broadcasters chose to air regular programs. Other stations replayed medal-winning performances by Korean athletes instead of showing soccer superstars Ronaldinho from Brazil and Lionel Messi of Argentina. Viewers were unaware that top tennis player Roger Federer lost in the quarterfinals. One of the only tennis matches broadcast on Korean television was a semifinal match between Spain's Rafael Nadal and Serbia's Novak Djokovic. ⓑSome were also quite surprised that the women's pole vault event was not shown in Korea. Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva is known as the best female pole-vaulter in history. However, when she set a new world record, SBS chose to air a miniseries instead. U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps was one of the only non-Korean athletes to be broadcast on Korean television. Phelps made history by winning the most gold medals in a single Olympic Games.
