Mayor Sankey Steps Down
Rumors of Charles Sankey’s resignation were confirmed today by an official statement released by the mayor’s office. Sankey has served just six months of his four-year term. According to Sankey, the decision was made after health problems resulting from a recently-diagnosed heart condition began to interfere with his work. However, many suspect that the mayor is hoping to avoid a scandal involving suspicious city contracts. Several construction contracts were awarded to a company of which the mayor turned out to be a partial proprietor. Despite the mayor’s resignation, a full investigation into the matter is already underway by detectives from the sheriff’s office and it will continue until the case is resolved.
The resignation will be effective immediately. In light of this news, the city council will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow at 3 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to attend the meeting to voice their points of view on the issue. The council has 30 days to assign a replacement to the position. If no agreement is reached regarding the appointment, City Council President Nora Johansen would temporarily serve as acting mayor until a special election could be arranged. Ms. Johansen said in a statement today that the council hopes to resolve this matter as quickly as possible to avoid disruptions in city services. |
