Update on Silverton’s Sunset Trail Project
Silverton, June 18—On Monday, Mayor Marcus Pickett hosted an event celebrating the successful completion of the expansion of the Sunset Exercise Trail. He was joined by Yolanda Flynn, president of the Silverton Eco-Friends Society. This long-awaited project is expected to help Silverton residents become more active and healthy. The newest section runs between Bassel Street and Sycamore Avenue along the rear boundary of the Silverton Community College’s campus. The trail offers space for biking and jogging, and crosses the Loma River at 14th Street.
The project’s total cost was $1.4 million, which also included repairs to several areas of the older sections of the trail. City funds were used to cover one million dollars of the costs, and the remainder was supplied by private donations, including a $300,000 donation from the non-profit group the Silverton Eco-Friends Society. The trail will remain open year-round, and the city has planned a marathon race next month to promote the use of the trail. The trail system contains several public restrooms and picnic areas, and the Parks Department hopes to add additional amenities such a tennis court and food stands.
