Worker Starts Wildfire near Hillview
A spokesperson from the Hillview Fire Department confirmed yesterday that a fire broke out north of Highway 17. It was started 1.------- by a construction worker in the area. The worker was operating a chainsaw at approximately 3 p.m. when a small flame from the equipment caused some dry leaves on the ground to catch fire. When another member of the crew noticed the fire, he drove to a nearby convenience store to use the phone. The lack of cell phone service in the area meant that at least ten minutes passed before authorities were 2.------- of the situation.
Unfortunately, no fire extinguisher or water source was at hand, so further action was not taken until firefighters arrived. By that time, the fire had spread significantly, fed by dry leaves and twigs. The station dispatched twenty-six firefighters to the scene and the fire was put out within thirty minutes of arrival. Approximately three acres of land were affected, and one home suffered 3.-------damage. An investigation is underway to determine the worker’s liability.
Fire Chief Vincent Carter reminds Hillview residents to take extra precautions at this time of year, as dry conditions elevate fire risk. |
