한미정상 '대북 압박, 핵 억지력, 동맹 비전' 합의 (U.S. Pledges to Protect South Korea)

In a summit at the White House with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, U.S. President Barack Obama recently confirmed that the U.S. would continue to protect South Korea from the aggressions of North Korea. Obama added that the U.S. government would provide an extended nuclear umbrella to South Korea as a supplementary protective measure against a nuclear attack from North Korea.

The two leaders also adopted a "joint vision for the ROK-US alliance," which includes an increased partnership in political, economic, and cultural areas. Obama also agreed to continue holding denuclearization talks with South Korea, China, Japan and Russia despite North Korea's boycott of the six-party talks. Obama and Lee made it clear that the recent provocative moves made by North Korea would not be tolerated under any circumstances, and both presidents called for tougher financial sanctions against the North.

"Our governments and our citizens will work closely to address the global challenges of terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, piracy, organized crime and narcotics, climate change, poverty, infringement on human rights, energy security, and epidemic disease," the joint vision for the ROK-US alliance said. "The alliance will enhance coordination on peacekeeping, post-conflict stabilization and development assistance, as is being undertaken in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Obama and Lee also discussed how to handle North Korea and viable solutions to stop Pyongyang's recent missile and nuclear threats. The Kim Jong-il regime recently admitted to the existence of a uranium enrichment program and vowed to continue building nuclear bombs following the U.N. Security Council's unanimous decision to implement tougher sanctions on North Korea.

The U.S. government originally promised to protect South Korea against the North by providing necessary nuclear deterrence capabilities beginning in 1978. The U.S.'s pledge to extend nuclear deterrence states that the U.S. military will use some of its tactical nuclear weapons such as B-61 nuclear bombs and Tomahawk cruise missiles to retaliate against North Korea in case of an attack.
