It's being able to touch somebody's life. | | | | | | |  | |    | South Korea may have the 13th largest economy in the world, but the Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index has ranked its global image at only 33rd among nearly 200 countries surveyed every year. In response, the South Korean government has created a list of the top ten things the nation must do if it wants to boost its global image. President Lee Myung-bak believes that South Korea can raise its global image to 15th place by as early as 2013 with the new set of measures.
First on the government's list is to increase international awareness of South Korean culture and the Korean language. For example, the government has promised to aggressively promote the national sport of taekwondo within Korea and abroad and unify international Korean language schools under the name "King Sejong Institute." It has also announced plans to create a "Korean Wave Program" to maintain and promote the popularity of South Korean pop music, movies, television dramas, and art around the world.
According to Lee, it is also important for South Korean citizens to become more global. Therefore, the nation plans on increasing the amount of financial aid it sends abroad and raising the number of volunteers it sends to foreign countries. Currently, 2,000 South Koreans go abroad annually; however, the nation does not often get recognition for their work as the volunteers belong to individual organizations. Starting next month, South Korea will have its own Peace-Corps type program, called "Korean Supporters," which will send 3,000 volunteers abroad yearly and make it the second largest volunteer group after the United States.
Additional items on the list include adopting a "Campus Asia" program to recruit foreign workers and scholars from neighboring Asian countries and creating a "Global Korea Scholarship" for foreign exchange students. South Korea also intends to spend more money on the development of state-of-the-art technologies, enhancement of culture and tourism within the nation.
Lastly, the government intends to make life in South Korea more comfortable for foreigners. A campaign has started to treat foreign residents and their families living in Korea better.
