Hearing loss is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. The earbuds that come with most mp3 players are terrible for a person's ears. Thanks to these earphones, hearing loss is now the third most common health problem in the United States. Earbuds are dangerous because they are placed directly into the ear.
Fortunately, there is a solution. Two companies have designed earphones that spare people's eardrums. Audio Bones makes headphones that are not even placed in the ears. Instead, Audio Bones are placed in the area just outside the ears and the sound goes directly through the skull into the inner ear.
This method has many advantages. First of all, it doesn't damage the eardrum. In addition, because the earphones don't plug the ear, the listener can hear what's going on around them. Not only is this safer, it's also more polite. The one major downside to Audio Bones is that the sound quality is very poor. The volume on mp3 players needs to be turned all the way up to be heard at all.
In contrast, the Zelco company makes a product called the Outi Earbud that goes on the external part of the ear. It actually uses cartilage to move sound to the inner ear. The sound quality can be much better, but the Outi has many more downsides than the Audio Bones. They can be uncomfortable to wear, for one thing. It is also difficult to find the best spot on your head for good sound quality. Worst of all, people around you can hear the music as well.
While neither product is perfect, both go a long way towards sparing people's ears.
