Goodbye "Jangma," Hello "Woogi"

Say goodbye to jangma. South Korea is officially finished with the "rainy season." Or at least the old word for it. This year, the Korea Meteorological Administration ① "jangma." From now on, the rainy season will be known as "woogi."

The KMA said a new term is necessary since South Korea's weather has changed. The temperature has risen a lot over the past few years. Experts say that the ② , subtropical . That means more rainy days over a longer period of time. Therefore, the KMA says it is not right to use the old word "jangma." From now on, weather reports will say that it can rain any time during the summer.

In the past, "jangma" was ③ from June to the middle of July. However, in recent years, there has been a lot of rain after the rainy season was supposed to have ended. In fact, weather reports show more rain in South Korea after the rainy season than during it. In the past, the rainy season produced an extra 50 millimeters of rain. Since 2000, there have been about 50 millimeters of rain less than during the rainy season.

South Korea isn't the only country saying goodbye to jangma, either. China and Japan have also seen increasing temperatures and more rain ④ .
